Why Dating Feels So Hard Right Now

“You are not bad at dating. You are following a pattern you were never taught to see.”

As summer comes to an end, I’ve been reflecting on the conversations I’ve had over these past few months. Again and again, no matter the person or the situation, they circled back to dating. The people I work with weren’t asking for advice on what to text. They were asking why they felt so anxious, so guarded, or so easily let down.

What stood out most was how rarely the problem was the other person. Instead, it was more often a pattern. Most of us have a default way of showing up when we start to care about someone, and we usually don’t notice it until it’s pointed out.

One question guided many of these conversations:

What do I do when I start to care about someone?

Why Dating Brings Out Our Patterns

Dating asks us to be open to someone we don’t know yet, and that uncertainty can be uncomfortable. When we feel uncertain, we tend to reach for whatever has protected us in the past. For some people that means analyzing every detail. For others it means moving fast, and for others it means staying guarded so nothing can hurt.

Family, friendships, and past relationships often shape these responses early. They are not character flaws. Rather, they are strategies that once made sense and are now running quietly in the background.

Because they feel so familiar, we rarely question them. We simply believe “this is just how I am” or “this always happens to me.”

How Dating Patterns Show Up

  • Reading meaning into a delayed text or a quiet day
  • Getting swept up quickly, then feeling confused when it fades
  • Downplaying how much you care so you don’t seem too invested
  • Replaying conversations long after they’re over
  • Feeling like you keep landing in the same story with different people

Many people realized these experiences were connected. What looked like unrelated dating problems were often the same pattern in different clothes.

Three Ways of Showing Up

I’ve come to think there are three main ways people tend to show up in dating. None of them is a flaw. Each one is a way of protecting yourself that made sense at some point. In fact, most people recognize themselves in one of them within a sentence or two. I won’t spoil them here, but I’ll say that the one people are most sure they aren’t is often the one that fits.

Find Your Pattern

If you’re curious which one sounds most like you, I put together a short quiz. It takes a couple of minutes, and there’s no wrong answer: https://makingmeaningpsychology.com/dating-quiz/

Final Reflection

Dating can feel like a mystery, but it often reveals something very familiar: how we handle closeness, uncertainty, and the fear of being let down. The goal is not to become someone else. It is to understand yourself well enough to choose how you show up.

When you begin to see your pattern, you may find you have more choice than you thought.
